The operator of Vizhinjam International Seaport has proposed the development of a dedicated cruise tourism village near the port and has sought around 20 acres of land to support the project.

The port, being developed and operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, is looking to expand its role beyond container transshipment by tapping into the growing cruise tourism market in the region. The proposed cruise village would include passenger facilities, tourism infrastructure and hospitality services designed to cater to international cruise liners and their passengers.

Industry sources indicate that the project is intended to position Vizhinjam as a cruise gateway for southern India. The planned development would offer amenities such as passenger terminals, cultural and shopping zones, restaurants and leisure areas aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Located near Thiruvananthapuram, the port benefits from its proximity to popular tourist destinations across Kerala, which could make it an attractive stop for cruise itineraries in the Indian Ocean region. Tourism stakeholders believe that a dedicated cruise village could help boost local tourism, generate employment and create new economic opportunities for the surrounding communities.

The proposal comes as the port continues to progress with its container operations and infrastructure development. Authorities have been exploring ways to leverage the port’s strategic location along major international shipping routes to attract both cargo and passenger traffic.

If approved, the cruise village project would form part of a broader plan to integrate maritime infrastructure with tourism development in the region. Officials say the initiative could help strengthen Kerala’s presence on global cruise circuits while supporting the long-term diversification of activities at Vizhinjam Port.
