India’s Avocado Boom Drives Import Surge Amid Weak Domestic Supply

India is witnessing a sharp rise in avocado consumption, driving a surge in imports as domestic production continues to lag behind growing demand in urban markets.

The increasing popularity of avocados in metro cities, fueled by health trends and expanding café and retail culture, has pushed import volumes higher from key suppliers such as Peru, Kenya, and Chile. However, limited domestic cultivation and supply-side constraints mean India remains heavily dependent on overseas shipments.

Importers say rising demand from supermarkets, quick-commerce platforms, and food service chains has created a strong but supply-sensitive market. Price fluctuations and logistics costs continue to influence retail pricing, making avocados a premium fruit in most parts of the country.

Agricultural experts note that India’s suitable growing regions are still in early stages of commercial avocado farming, with challenges related to climate adaptability, yield consistency, and farmer awareness. As a result, imports are expected to dominate the market in the near term, even as interest in local cultivation slowly grows.
