Air China Cargo is set to expand its international freighter network with the launch of a new cargo service connecting Shanghai and Glasgow Prestwick Airport, strengthening air freight connectivity between China and the United Kingdom.
The new Shanghai–Prestwick route is expected to support growing trade flows between Asia and Europe, particularly for sectors such as e-commerce, electronics, automotive components, pharmaceuticals, and industrial cargo. The service will provide exporters and freight forwarders with additional capacity amid sustained demand for reliable long-haul air cargo solutions.
Industry sources said Prestwick Airport has been actively expanding its cargo operations and positioning itself as a strategic logistics gateway for the UK market. The airport’s cargo handling infrastructure, runway capabilities, and access to regional distribution networks have helped attract additional international freighter services.
Air China Cargo continues to strengthen its overseas cargo network as Chinese carriers increase investments in dedicated freight operations to support export growth and cross-border e-commerce demand. The airline operates an extensive freighter fleet connecting major manufacturing and trade hubs across Asia, Europe, and North America.
The addition of Prestwick to the airline’s network is expected to improve supply chain flexibility for shippers seeking alternative gateways outside major congested European hubs. Logistics companies also expect the route to provide faster transit options for time-sensitive and high-value cargo shipments.
Industry analysts noted that direct cargo connectivity between China and regional UK airports has gained importance as businesses diversify logistics networks and seek more resilient transportation options amid ongoing global supply chain disruptions.
The new route further reinforces the growing role of specialised air cargo services in supporting international trade flows and strengthening commercial links between China and European markets.
