Ocean Network Express (ONE) has revised its vessel deployment strategy on the Asia–Europe trade lane by rerouting services via the Cape of Good Hope, as container carriers continue adjusting operations to address ongoing security risks in the Red Sea region.
The Japanese container shipping line said the network changes are aimed at maintaining schedule reliability and minimising disruptions to cargo movement between Asia and Europe. The revised routing strategy includes adjustments to sailing schedules, transit times, and vessel rotations across several services.
Shipping companies have increasingly diverted vessels away from the Red Sea and the Suez Canal due to heightened geopolitical tensions and security threats affecting commercial shipping in the area. The Cape of Good Hope route, while significantly longer, is being used as an alternative to reduce operational risk.
Industry analysts noted that rerouting around southern Africa has increased voyage durations, fuel consumption, and operating expenses for container carriers. The changes have also contributed to tighter vessel availability, higher freight rates, and equipment imbalances across global shipping networks.
ONE said it continues to monitor the evolving security environment and work closely with customers to manage supply chain impacts. The company is also focusing on maintaining service stability amid continued volatility in international maritime trade routes.
The Asia–Europe trade corridor remains one of the world’s busiest container shipping lanes, supporting large volumes of consumer goods, industrial products, electronics, automotive cargo, and retail merchandise.
Industry observers said prolonged reliance on Cape routing could continue to reshape global shipping schedules and logistics planning, particularly during peak cargo seasons. Shippers are also being advised to plan inventories and supply chains carefully due to longer transit times and potential schedule disruptions.
The latest service adjustments reflect broader changes across the container shipping industry as carriers adapt to evolving geopolitical risks and operational challenges in critical maritime corridors.
