India Sets New Russian Crude Import Record as Purchases Hit 2.6 Million Bpd

India’s imports of Russian crude oil reached a new record high in June, with purchases rising to around 2.6 million barrels per day (bpd) as refiners continued to rely on discounted Russian supplies to meet domestic energy demand.

The surge further strengthens Russia’s position as India’s leading crude oil supplier, with refiners increasing intake despite global market uncertainties and shifting trade dynamics. Competitive pricing and favourable supply arrangements have encouraged Indian oil companies to maintain strong procurement from Russia.

The rise in Russian crude flows comes as India continues to balance energy security, affordability, and supply diversification. Indian refiners have increasingly turned to Russian barrels since 2022, when global energy markets were disrupted by geopolitical tensions and supply constraints.

Higher imports also reflect India’s growing fuel demand, supported by economic expansion and increased industrial activity. While Russia remains a key supplier, India continues to source crude from multiple regions, including the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, to manage supply risks.

Market analysts expect Russian crude to remain an important part of India’s energy mix, though future buying decisions will depend on global oil prices, geopolitical developments, and international trade conditions.
