A.P. Moller–Maersk has begun deploying next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity devices across its global refrigerated container (reefer) fleet, marking a significant step in strengthening cold chain visibility and digital cargo management.
The shipping giant said approximately 30% of its reefer fleet has already been equipped with the new IoT technology, with plans to upgrade all refrigerated containers over the coming years.
The new devices are designed to deliver a more reliable flow of real-time cargo data throughout the container’s journey, addressing the growing demand among cold chain customers for continuous shipment visibility and improved data availability.
“Real-time access and data availability are becoming increasingly vital for our cold chain customers. The deployment of our next-generation IoT devices will provide them with a much more reliable data flow throughout the container journey,” said Bruce Marshall, Head of Reefer Cargo at Maersk.
The rollout follows Maersk’s ongoing deployment of its new digital connectivity platform across 450 vessels, providing the technological backbone for enhanced cargo tracking and future digital logistics solutions.
According to Maersk, the company is replacing all existing reefer IoT devices with the latest-generation technology, standardising connectivity across its global refrigerated container fleet. The move is expected to improve service consistency and provide customers with a more seamless digital experience.
Since 2019, Maersk has offered customers its Captain Peter visibility platform, enabling real-time monitoring of refrigerated cargo from the moment containers are sealed until final delivery. The upgraded IoT infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance the platform’s performance by ensuring more reliable and continuous data transmission.
Looking ahead, Maersk plans to expand Captain Peter beyond cargo visibility, transforming it into an intelligent decision-support tool capable of interpreting shipment data and recommending actions to help customers better manage temperature-sensitive cargo.
The initiative reinforces Maersk’s broader digitalisation strategy aimed at improving supply chain transparency, operational efficiency, and the reliability of global cold chain logistics.
