Cathay Cargo is set to become the first airline to shift its dedicated freighter operations to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a significant milestone in the airport’s development as a major air cargo hub. The move is expected to enhance cargo handling efficiency, strengthen international connectivity, and support the growing demand for air freight in India’s commercial capital.

The relocation of Cathay Cargo’s freighter services to NMIA is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport while providing access to modern cargo infrastructure designed to handle increasing volumes of international freight. The new airport is being developed with advanced cargo facilities, streamlined customs processes, and expanded warehousing capacity to cater to high-value and time-sensitive shipments.

Industry observers believe Cathay Cargo’s decision reflects growing confidence in NMIA’s ability to serve as a strategic gateway for global cargo operations. As one of Asia’s leading air cargo carriers, Cathay Cargo transports a wide range of commodities, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, perishables, e-commerce shipments, and engineering goods, making its presence significant for India’s import and export ecosystem.

The transition is expected to benefit exporters and importers by improving cargo processing times, increasing flight capacity, and enhancing connectivity with key markets across Asia, Europe, and North America. Logistics providers also anticipate reduced turnaround times and improved supply chain reliability once dedicated freighter operations commence at the new airport.

NMIA is being positioned as a complementary hub to Mumbai’s existing airport, with a strong focus on cargo operations alongside passenger services. The airport is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s expanding international trade by offering state-of-the-art logistics infrastructure and greater operational flexibility for airlines.

Cathay Cargo’s early commitment is likely to encourage other international freight carriers to establish operations at NMIA, accelerating the airport’s emergence as a leading cargo gateway. As air freight demand continues to grow, the move is expected to strengthen India’s aviation logistics network and reinforce Mumbai’s position as one of the country’s most important cargo centres.
