Bangladesh has marked a significant milestone in its maritime sector with the induction of its largest-ever flagged tanker, MT Omera Liberty, which embarked on its maiden voyage on March 31.

Owned by MJL Bangladesh, a concern of East Coast Group, the newly built vessel measures 250 metres in length and has a carrying capacity of 115,000 tonnes of fuel oil. The addition of this high-capacity tanker underscores the country’s growing ambitions in global energy transportation and shipping.

The vessel was constructed by Daehan Shipbuilding in South Korea at an estimated cost of $73 million. Its delivery reflects continued collaboration between Bangladeshi shipping interests and leading international shipyards.

Commercially, MT Omera Liberty has already secured a one-year charter agreement with Shell. The deal is expected to generate annual revenues in the range of $10 million to $15 million, providing a strong earnings base from the outset of operations.

The vessel’s naming ceremony took place at the South Korean shipyard, attended by senior leadership including Azam J Chowdhury, Chairman of East Coast Group, along with other dignitaries and officials.

With the induction of MT Omera Liberty, Bangladesh’s ocean-going fleet has expanded to 105 vessels, reflecting steady growth in the country’s maritime capabilities. Looking ahead, MJL Bangladesh has outlined plans to further strengthen its fleet with the addition of an LPG carrier currently under construction in Japan, expected to be delivered by December.

The development signals Bangladesh’s increasing participation in the global shipping and energy logistics sectors, positioning it as an emerging player in international maritime trade.
