The BIMCO has launched a new campaign film highlighting the urgent need for governments and global stakeholders to strengthen protections for seafarers, who play a critical role in sustaining the global supply chain of food, fuel, and essential goods.

The initiative comes at a time when the maritime industry is facing mounting geopolitical tensions, with more shipping routes affected by conflict and instability. According to BIMCO, nearly 20,000 seafarers are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, operating under heightened risk and enduring significant mental stress.

David Loosley, Secretary General and CEO of BIMCO, emphasized the human cost of disruptions to global trade. “At times of geopolitical unrest, conflict and uncertainty, disruption to global trade is a major concern worldwide. We need governments and decision makers to focus on the human cost too,” he said, noting that incidents such as ship detentions, attacks, and hijackings leave families ashore fearing for the safety of their loved ones.

BIMCO also raised concerns over the increasing criminalisation of seafarers, particularly in cases involving drug discoveries on board vessels or environmental incidents. The organization pointed to several instances where crew members have been detained or sentenced without sufficient evidence or due legal process.

“Seafarers should never be detained or sentenced without sufficient evidence and due process. We need governments to oppose liability regimes that presume guilt,” Loosley added, calling for stricter adherence to international conventions that safeguard maritime workers.

The campaign further underscores longstanding industry demands for seafarers to be formally recognised as key workers. Progress has been made in regions such as the European Union, and globally through the International Labour Organization, which recently adopted amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention granting seafarers key worker status.

Reiterating the sector’s importance, BIMCO urged all nations to take decisive action. “Seafarers are the backbone of global trade and economic prosperity. It is imperative that all states ensure their protection,” Loosley said.

The campaign aims to bring global attention to the challenges faced by seafarers and drive coordinated international efforts to ensure their safety, rights, and dignity.
