A 29-year-old, Romeeta Bundela from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, became the first Indian female Electro Technical Officer (ETO) on a Maersk ship, a trailblazer in a field dominated by men. Her journey to this historic achievement was marked by perseverance and the determination to defy stereotypes.
Romeet’s career began amidst scepticism and challenges. Stepping aboard her first
Maersk shop in December 2017, she faced initial doubts and prejudice due to her gender.
As the sole woman among twenty men on a container vessel, she quickly silenced critics
with her skill and dedication.
Her fascination with maritime life started early, stemming from her roots in Bhusawal,
Maharstashtra. Despite initial aspirations to join the Indian Navy, she pivoted to merchant shipping after discovering the Electro Technical Officer course at the Tolani Maritime Institute. Becoming the institute’s first female ETO cadet, she embarked on a journey that
would redefine her career.
Romeeta’s resilience was tested further during her early days at sea. Enduring months
away from home, she persevered through demanding conditions and sceptical colleagues.
Her tenure with Maersk saw her rapidly ascend fromETO to senior roles, including being
the youngest and first female electrical superintendent in the company’s history.
Beyond her technical responsibilities managing electrical, electronic, and automation
systems onboard, Romeeta exemplifies grit in overcoming adversity. During the pandemic, she spent over nine months on cargo vessels in China, navigating logistical challenges and personal sacrifices to continue her work.
Transitioning to Carnival UK in 2023, Romeets embraced new opportunities in the cruise
industry, enjoying shorter stents and diverse cultural experiences across the globe. Her
career exemplifies breaking barriers, challenging norms, and proving that gender is no
hindrance in achieving excellence.
Reflecting on her journey, Romeeta offers advice to aspiring female seafarers: “Don’t
listen to naysayers. Focus on your goals and believe in your capabilities. You can achieve
anything a man can, and more.” Her story underscores the importance of determination
and resilience in carving out a place in traditionally male-dominated fields.
In conclusion, Romeeta Bundela’s pioneering spirit not only shattered stereotypes but also
paved the way for future generations of women in maritime careers. Her journey is a
testament to the power of perseverance and passion in realising dreams against all odds.
