The Centre has approved Navi Mumbai International Airport as a designated entry point for pharmaceutical imports, a move aimed at strengthening India’s healthcare logistics network and improving the efficiency of the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain. The decision is expected to facilitate faster movement of medicines, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), vaccines, and other critical healthcare products into the country.

By allowing drug imports through the upcoming airport, the government seeks to expand cargo handling capacity, reduce congestion at existing air cargo gateways, and provide importers with an additional logistics hub in the Mumbai metropolitan region. The measure is expected to improve supply chain resilience while supporting the timely distribution of essential medicines across domestic and international markets.

The new import facility is likely to benefit pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, healthcare providers, and logistics companies by offering greater flexibility in cargo routing and reducing transit times. Industry stakeholders believe the additional gateway will help streamline customs clearance, improve cold-chain operations, and lower logistics costs for temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments.

Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed as a major aviation and cargo hub to complement the existing airport in Mumbai. Once fully operational, the airport is expected to play a significant role in handling growing volumes of air freight, including high-value and time-sensitive cargo such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products, and medical equipment.

The approval aligns with the government’s broader efforts to strengthen India’s position as a global pharmaceutical manufacturing and export hub. Enhanced air cargo infrastructure and improved logistics connectivity are expected to support the sector’s expanding international trade while ensuring uninterrupted availability of critical healthcare products.

Industry experts say the move will not only improve import efficiency but also reinforce India’s pharmaceutical supply chain by creating additional capacity to handle future growth in healthcare cargo. As demand for specialised pharmaceutical logistics continues to rise, the inclusion of Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to enhance the country’s competitiveness in global life sciences and healthcare logistics.
