Choked Shipping Routes Jolt Indian Manufacturers Amid West Asia Crisis

Indian manufacturers are facing growing uncertainty as escalating tensions in West Asia disrupt critical maritime routes, threatening supply chains and export schedules.

The worsening security situation around the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most vital energy and cargo corridors—has slowed vessel movements and increased operational risks, sending shockwaves through India’s manufacturing and export sectors. Shipping companies have begun rerouting vessels and imposing war-risk premiums, significantly raising freight costs.

Industry sources say sectors such as automobiles, electronics, chemicals and consumer goods are particularly vulnerable due to their dependence on Gulf-linked shipping lanes for both raw materials and finished product exports. Several exporters have already reported delays in shipments and rising logistics expenses as carriers reassess schedules and safety protocols.

Automobile manufacturers and component makers are closely monitoring the situation, as any prolonged disruption could delay the import of critical parts and components sourced from international markets. Exporters of perishable goods and consumer products are also struggling with uncertainty around delivery timelines.

Shipping lines have introduced additional surcharges and insurance premiums to offset heightened risks in the region, adding pressure on already thin margins for exporters. Logistics operators warn that continued disruptions could ripple across global supply chains, affecting manufacturing output and trade flows.

Industry associations have begun urging the government to monitor fuel availability and logistics bottlenecks while exploring alternative shipping routes and markets to minimise the fallout.

With maritime trade remaining the backbone of India’s manufacturing supply chains, stakeholders say stability in key sea lanes will be crucial to prevent deeper disruptions in the coming weeks.
