Greek container ship owner Costamare Inc. has expanded its feeder containership newbuilding program, bringing the total orderbook in its 3,100-TEU vessel series to 10 units as it continues to strengthen its presence in the mid-size container shipping segment.
The additional orders build on the company’s strategy to modernize its fleet with fuel-efficient vessels suited for regional and feeder trade routes. The 3,100-TEU ships are designed to serve short-to-medium haul container services, linking major transshipment hubs with smaller ports across Asia, Europe and other key markets.
Industry sources indicate the vessels are expected to feature improved energy efficiency and compliance with evolving environmental regulations, reflecting the shipping sector’s broader shift toward greener and more sustainable ship designs.
The feeder segment has attracted growing investment from shipowners in recent years as container lines increasingly rely on smaller vessels to connect secondary ports with major global shipping networks. Analysts say demand for modern feeder ships remains relatively strong, particularly as older tonnage approaches retirement and environmental standards tighten.
For Costamare, the expanding orderbook underscores its long-term strategy of renewing and expanding its fleet to capture opportunities in container shipping. The company, which operates a large portfolio of container vessels on long-term charters with major liner operators, has continued to invest in newbuildings despite broader market volatility.
Once delivered, the 10-ship series is expected to enhance Costamare’s operational flexibility and strengthen its position in the global feeder containership market.
