Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its maritime sector with the successful completion of the first-ever international ship bunkering operation at Gwadar Port, marking the launch of commercial marine fuel supply services at the strategically located deep-sea port.
The landmark operation was carried out by the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) in collaboration with global energy trader Vitol. During the operation, the UAE-linked LNG carrier ENUGU was supplied with 2,500 metric tonnes of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), marking the first international bunkering service at Gwadar.
The VLSFO supplied complies with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) latest environmental regulations and was produced domestically by Cnergyico PK Limited. This is the first internationally compliant marine fuel refined in Pakistan to be delivered through Gwadar Port.
The successful operation officially inaugurates commercial bunkering services at Gwadar, a development expected to strengthen the port’s position as an emerging refueling hub for international vessels transiting the Arabian Sea and the Gulf region.
Industry experts believe the timing is favourable, as geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions to traditional shipping routes have increased the need for alternative bunkering locations. Situated close to major international shipping lanes, Gwadar offers a strategic advantage by providing efficient, competitive, and secure refueling services for passing vessels.
The introduction of bunkering services is also expected to contribute significantly to Pakistan’s Blue Economy by generating new revenue streams through marine fuel sales, port operations, logistics, and associated maritime services. The initiative is anticipated to enhance the commercial attractiveness of Gwadar Port, attract greater international vessel traffic, and increase foreign exchange earnings.
The development supports Pakistan’s broader strategy of expanding commercial activities at Gwadar Port under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with the long-term objective of establishing the port as a regional gateway for trade, energy, and logistics.
The completion of the inaugural international bunkering operation represents an important step in Gwadar’s evolution from a cargo gateway to a comprehensive maritime services hub, strengthening Pakistan’s ambitions to play a larger role in regional shipping and energy logistics.
