HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explore ways to strengthen India–South Korea cooperation in shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing, as India steps up efforts to expand its domestic shipbuilding capabilities.

The discussions focused on potential collaboration in shipbuilding, ship repair, technology transfer, green vessels and skill development, aligning with India’s push to develop shipbuilding clusters and modernise port-linked industrial infrastructure. HD Hyundai is among the world’s leading shipbuilders, with expertise in advanced vessel design and marine engineering.

Officials said the engagement fits into India’s broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, aimed at reducing reliance on overseas shipyards and positioning India as a competitive global hub for shipbuilding and repair.

Industry observers noted that deeper cooperation with HD Hyundai could attract fresh investment, support employment generation and accelerate adoption of advanced and environmentally sustainable shipbuilding technologies in India.
