HD KSOE has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support the development of India’s first mega greenfield shipyard with a planned capacity of 2.5 million gross tonnes at Thoothukudi, marking a major step in the country’s shipbuilding expansion plans.
The proposed shipyard is expected to strengthen India’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities and position the country as a larger player in the global maritime manufacturing sector. Industry officials said the facility will be designed to handle construction of large commercial vessels, offshore assets and next-generation ships.
The collaboration is also expected to bring advanced shipbuilding technology, engineering expertise and operational know-how from South Korea, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding nations. The project aligns with India’s broader push to boost maritime infrastructure, increase local manufacturing and reduce dependence on overseas shipyards.
Analysts said the Thoothukudi project could help generate significant employment opportunities and support the growth of ancillary industries linked to steel, marine equipment, logistics and port services. The development also reflects increasing international interest in India’s maritime sector as global shipowners look to diversify shipbuilding partnerships and supply chains.
