Goods exports from India are likely to witness a decline in March, with estimates pointing to a 7–8% drop, as escalating uncertainty in West Asia disrupts trade flows and impacts logistics chains.

The ongoing tensions in the region have affected key maritime routes and raised concerns over the safety and cost of shipments passing through critical corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz. This has led to higher freight rates, increased insurance premiums, and delays in cargo movement, weighing on export volumes.

Sectors heavily dependent on West Asian markets, including petroleum products, engineering goods, and chemicals, are expected to be the most impacted. Exporters have reported shipment disruptions, rerouting of vessels, and cautious ordering patterns from buyers amid the volatile geopolitical environment.

Additionally, uncertainty has prompted some shipping lines and logistics providers to adopt a wait-and-watch approach, tightening capacity and further complicating supply chains. Air cargo operations have also faced challenges due to airspace restrictions and rising fuel costs.

Despite the short-term dip, trade experts believe the slowdown may be temporary, contingent on how quickly stability returns to the region. Exporters are also exploring alternative routes and markets to mitigate risks and sustain momentum.

The March performance will be closely watched as an indicator of how geopolitical tensions in West Asia are shaping India’s external trade outlook in the near term.
