India and Iran are working to find practical and mutually acceptable solutions to advance the long-delayed Chabahar Port project, Iran’s envoy to India said, underlining both sides’ commitment to sustaining cooperation despite geopolitical and operational challenges.

Speaking on the sidelines of a diplomatic engagement, the Iranian ambassador said discussions are focused on addressing implementation hurdles, including financing, logistics , and regulatory issues, to ensure steady progress at the strategically important port on Iran’s southeastern coast. Chabahar is seen as a key gateway for India to access Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing traditional routes.

The envoy noted that regular consultations are ongoing between officials and technical teams from both countries to align timelines and operational frameworks. “Both sides are keen on practical steps that can move the project forward,” the envoy said, adding that the port holds long-term economic and regional connectivity potential.

India has been involved in the development and operation of parts of Chabahar, including terminal operations, with an emphasis on trade facilitation and regional connectivity. The port is also expected to integrate with international transport corridors, boosting cargo movement and reducing transit times.

While progress has faced headwinds from sanctions-related constraints and regional uncertainties, officials on both sides have reiterated their intent to maintain momentum through phased development and operational efficiencies.

The renewed push comes amid broader efforts by India and Iran to deepen economic engagement, with Chabahar remaining a cornerstone of their bilateral cooperation agenda.
