India’s coal imports for the power sector declined by 13% in April, reflecting improved domestic coal availability, higher production, and the government’s continued push to reduce reliance on imported fuel. The decline comes as thermal power producers increasingly sourced coal from domestic mines, helping lower import dependency while supporting energy security.

According to industry data, the reduction in imports was driven by robust domestic coal output, adequate stock levels at power plants, and sustained efforts by public sector miners to meet growing demand. The improved supply enabled utilities to optimize fuel procurement without compromising electricity generation, even as power consumption remained strong.

The fall in imports is expected to ease pressure on foreign exchange outflows and reduce logistics costs associated with overseas coal procurement. It also aligns with India’s broader strategy of enhancing self-sufficiency in the energy sector by maximizing domestic resource utilization.

Coal continues to play a critical role in India’s electricity generation, accounting for the majority of the country’s power mix. To support rising demand, the government has been expanding mining capacity, improving coal transportation infrastructure, and encouraging greater efficiency across the supply chain.

Industry experts note that while imports may still be required for specific grades of coal or during periods of peak demand, the current trend highlights the growing capability of domestic producers to meet the requirements of the power sector. Continued investments in mining, rail connectivity, and power infrastructure are expected to further strengthen India’s energy resilience and reduce dependence on imported coal in the coming months.
