India’s imports of crude oil from Russia have surged by 90% in recent months, as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact traditional supply routes.

The sharp increase reflects a strategic shift by Indian refiners seeking stable and cost-effective alternatives amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia. With uncertainty affecting shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, buyers have turned to Russian crude, which is being offered at competitive prices.

Industry sources indicate that rerouting and delays in tanker movements have pushed up freight and insurance costs for cargo transiting through the region. As a result, refiners are diversifying sourcing strategies to mitigate risks and ensure uninterrupted supply.

Russia has emerged as a key supplier for India since 2022, and the latest surge further strengthens its position in the country’s energy import basket. The availability of discounted barrels and flexible payment mechanisms has also supported higher intake levels.

Experts note that while the shift helps India maintain energy security in the short term, prolonged geopolitical instability could continue to influence trade patterns and sourcing decisions.

The development highlights the growing impact of global conflicts on energy markets, with import-dependent nations like India adapting quickly to safeguard supply chains and manage cost pressures.
