The Centre has unveiled an ambitious five-year roadmap to shift India’s seafood exports from primarily raw shrimp to high-value, premium products, aiming to enhance global competitiveness and boost export earnings.
The plan focuses on increasing value addition through advanced processing, branding, and diversification of product offerings. Authorities aim to promote ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat seafood, improve packaging standards, and build stronger global brand recognition for Indian marine products.
Officials said the strategy will also emphasize upgrading infrastructure, including modern processing facilities, cold chain logistics, and export-oriented clusters. Strengthening quality control, traceability, and compliance with international food safety norms will remain a key priority under the initiative.
India, already one of the world’s largest exporters of shrimp, is seeking to reduce dependence on bulk commodity exports and move up the value chain. By targeting premium markets in regions such as North America, Europe, and East Asia, the government hopes to secure better price realization for exporters.
The roadmap also includes support for aquaculture innovation, sustainable fishing practices, and capacity building for stakeholders across the value chain. Industry participants are expected to benefit from policy incentives and improved market access.
Experts believe the shift toward value-added seafood products could significantly enhance India’s export profile, making it more resilient to price fluctuations and global demand cycles while strengthening its position in the international seafood market.
