Iran has described Chabahar Port as a major pillar of its strategic partnership with India, underlining the project’s importance for regional connectivity and trade. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the port remains a key symbol of India-Iran cooperation and expressed hope that New Delhi would continue investing in the project despite challenges arising from US sanctions.
Speaking during his visit to India, Araghchi highlighted Chabahar’s role as a gateway connecting India to Central Asia, the Caucasus and Europe. He also called for a greater diplomatic role for India in promoting stability and security in the Middle East region.
India has been working with Iran to safeguard its interests in the strategically located port after the expiry of a US sanctions waiver linked to Chabahar operations. The port is considered crucial for India’s trade access to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan, and forms an important part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
