Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SCMS Water Institute to jointly undertake the feasibility study for the proposed extension of the Kochi Water Metro from Aluva Metro Station to Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) via the Periyar River.

The collaboration marks a significant step towards strengthening Kerala’s sustainable urban mobility network by exploring an integrated water-based transport corridor that would connect the metro rail network with the state’s busiest airport.

As part of its long-term vision of developing an efficient, environmentally sustainable, and multimodal transport system, KMRL is conducting a comprehensive feasibility study for the proposed route. The project aims to provide commuters with a seamless and eco-friendly travel alternative while enhancing regional connectivity through innovative water transport infrastructure.

Under the MoU, SCMS Water Institute will serve as the knowledge partner for the study, providing academic, technical, and research support. The institute will undertake specialised investigations, including floodplain analysis, hydraulic and hydrological assessments, water resources modelling, and other scientific studies required to evaluate the technical feasibility of the proposed corridor.

The institute will also provide technical guidance to survey teams engaged by KMRL, supporting survey planning, data collection methodologies, sampling techniques, field protocols, and quality assurance processes.

According to KMRL, the partnership is expected to strengthen the scientific and technical foundation of the proposed Water Metro extension while ensuring environmental sustainability and climate resilience remain key considerations throughout the planning process.

If implemented, the proposed Water Metro connection to CIAL would significantly improve integration between Kochi Metro, inland waterways, and the international airport, offering passengers a unique, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport. The project is also expected to further reinforce Kochi’s position as a pioneer in climate-resilient and integrated urban mobility solutions.
