South Korean container carrier KMTC Line has placed an order for six new feeder containerships at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries as part of its ongoing fleet expansion and modernization strategy.

The vessels, each with a capacity of around 1,900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), are expected to serve regional container trade routes across Asia. Feeder ships of this size play a crucial role in connecting smaller ports with major transshipment hubs, supporting the broader container shipping network.

Industry sources say the order reflects growing demand for modern and fuel-efficient feeder vessels as shipping lines continue to renew aging fleets and improve operational efficiency. The ships are likely to incorporate advanced design features aimed at reducing fuel consumption and meeting evolving environmental regulations.

For KMTC Line, the investment underscores its focus on strengthening its regional service capabilities, particularly in intra-Asia trade lanes where container traffic has remained relatively resilient despite broader market volatility.

Shipbuilders in South Korea, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, have seen steady demand for feeder containerships as carriers worldwide place orders to replace older vessels and prepare for stricter emissions standards.

Once delivered, the six vessels are expected to enhance KMTC Line’s operational flexibility and help the company maintain a competitive position in the rapidly evolving Asian container shipping market.
