Foraying into logistics business, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation launched ‘Namma Cargo’ services Saturday. Aimed at generating more non-fare box revenue, KSRTC in the first phase will operate 20 trucks carrying goods across the state. The transport utility plans to add another 500 trucks to its fleet within a year.

To begin with, the services will cater to districts such as Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Hassan, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Chikkamagalur, Kolar and Davanagere.

Kickstarting the initiative in Bengaluru, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy said, “We will add 100 trucks to the fleet within a month and the rest will follow later this year. Government departments can use the cargo and logistics services of KSRTC.”

KSRTC has entered into a deal with two private entities and provided trucks on a rental basis for some time. Each truck costing Rs 17 lakh can carry six tonnes of goods. The utility plans to fully utilise Basaveshwara Bus Terminal in Peenya for the purpose.
