Maersk and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) are working together to enhance productivity at Colombo’s port terminals, as the key transshipment hub seeks to strengthen operational efficiency and maintain its competitiveness in regional shipping networks.
The collaboration is expected to focus on improving vessel turnaround times, optimizing container handling processes, and enhancing coordination between shipping lines and terminal operations. Industry stakeholders said increased productivity will be critical to managing growing cargo volumes and minimizing congestion risks.
Colombo remains a major transshipment gateway for South Asian trade, particularly for Indian cargo, and plays a strategic role in east-west maritime routes. Port authorities and shipping operators are increasingly prioritizing digitalization, infrastructure upgrades, and operational streamlining to support higher throughput levels.
Logistics experts noted that stronger terminal performance could improve schedule reliability for carriers while supporting Colombo’s position as a preferred hub in the Indian Ocean region amid rising competition from neighboring ports.
