The Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has launched a new 2,400-kilometre logistics corridor for the transportation of pig iron, creating a direct freight link between Andhra Pradesh and key industrial markets in North India. The initiative is aimed at improving supply chain efficiency, reducing transit times, and supporting the growing demand for bulk raw materials across the country’s manufacturing sector.

The newly established corridor will facilitate the movement of pig iron from production centers in Andhra Pradesh to steel plants, foundries, and industrial consumers located in northern states. By leveraging rail-based logistics, the service is expected to provide a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to long-distance road transportation.

Industry stakeholders view the corridor as an important step toward strengthening India’s multimodal logistics network. The dedicated freight movement is designed to ensure reliable transportation of large cargo volumes while minimizing handling delays and improving cargo visibility throughout the supply chain.

The launch aligns with broader efforts to enhance domestic freight connectivity and support industrial growth through efficient logistics infrastructure. As demand for steel and related products continues to rise, seamless movement of critical raw materials such as pig iron has become increasingly important for maintaining production schedules and reducing supply chain bottlenecks.

CONCOR stated that the service demonstrates its commitment to developing customized logistics solutions for bulk commodity movements. The company expects the corridor to attract additional industrial cargo traffic and encourage greater use of rail transport for long-distance freight operations.

The new route is also expected to contribute to lower transportation costs, reduced carbon emissions, and improved market access for producers. By connecting southern manufacturing hubs with northern consumption centers, the corridor strengthens national supply chain integration and supports India’s ongoing industrial and infrastructure development objectives.
