Plans to develop a new airport in Dhanbad have moved a step forward, with authorities initiating feasibility studies to assess the technical, financial and environmental viability of the proposed project.

The assessments will examine potential sites, land requirements, connectivity, projected passenger demand and overall cost implications. Officials indicated that the study will also evaluate the airport’s role in enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic growth in Jharkhand’s industrial belt.

Dhanbad, widely known for its coal mining and industrial activities, currently relies on road and rail links for major transport needs, with the nearest commercial airports located in other cities. A dedicated airport is expected to improve accessibility for businesses, investors and residents, while reducing travel time to key metropolitan centres.

Preliminary discussions suggest the proposed airport could be developed in phases, depending on projected traffic and funding availability. Authorities are also expected to assess environmental clearances and rehabilitation requirements if land acquisition is involved.

If found viable, the project could significantly boost trade, tourism and employment in the region, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities across India.

Further clarity on timelines and investment structure is likely once the feasibility report is submitted and reviewed by state and central agencies.
