The Northern India Steamer Agents Association (NISAA) has welcomed the initiative taken by Northern Railway and the Ministry of Railways to engage with key stakeholders from the logistics and container transportation sector, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening India’s multimodal logistics ecosystem and enhancing the efficiency of EXIM cargo movement.

The interaction, held on June 12, 2026, at Baroda House in New Delhi, brought together representatives from shipping lines, Container Train Operators (CTOs), logistics service providers and other industry stakeholders to discuss measures aimed at improving rail-based container transportation across the country.

In a statement, NISAA appreciated the Railway Ministry’s proactive approach in seeking industry feedback and collaborating with stakeholders to address operational challenges and identify opportunities for growth in containerized freight movement.

The association particularly welcomed the focus on time-tabled freight services, which are expected to bring greater predictability and reliability to cargo transportation. Industry participants believe that fixed-schedule freight operations can help reduce transit uncertainties, improve supply chain planning and make rail transport a more attractive option for exporters and importers.

NISAA also endorsed the Railways’ efforts to strengthen port connectivity and maximize the utilization of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs). Enhanced connectivity between ports, inland container depots and industrial hubs is expected to facilitate faster cargo evacuation and reduce logistics costs, while increased use of DFCs can significantly improve transit times and network efficiency.

Another key area highlighted during the meeting was the need to attract a larger share of cargo currently moving by road onto the rail network. Stakeholders noted that shifting freight from road to rail can help reduce transportation costs, ease highway congestion and support the country’s sustainability goals through lower carbon emissions.

The association further welcomed the emphasis on digital integration and technology-driven solutions to streamline logistics operations. Improved digital connectivity among railways, ports, shipping lines and logistics operators is expected to enhance visibility, simplify documentation processes and improve overall supply chain efficiency.

According to NISAA, the initiatives discussed during the stakeholder consultation align with the Government’s broader vision of developing an integrated, cost-effective and globally competitive logistics framework. Increasing rail’s modal share in India’s EXIM trade is seen as a critical component of this strategy, particularly as the country seeks to expand exports and strengthen its position in global supply chains.

Reiterating its commitment to the sector’s development, NISAA assured the Railway Ministry and Northern Railway of its full support in implementing the proposed measures and fostering greater collaboration among all stakeholders involved in container transportation.

Industry observers view the engagement as an important step towards creating a more efficient, reliable and sustainable freight transportation network, with closer cooperation between the railways and logistics industry expected to play a crucial role in achieving India’s long-term trade and logistics objectives.
