India is aiming to significantly expand its footprint in the global sports goods market, with NITI Aayog outlining a comprehensive strategy to boost exports and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
In a recent report, the policy think tank highlighted the country’s strong manufacturing base in sports equipment, particularly in clusters such as Meerut and Jalandhar. However, it noted that India’s share in the global market remains modest, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to unlock export potential.
The report recommends a multi-pronged approach, including upgrading manufacturing infrastructure, improving product quality, and enhancing compliance with international standards. It also emphasizes the importance of branding and marketing Indian sports goods in key global markets to compete with established exporters.
To support exporters, NITI Aayog has called for better access to finance, streamlined logistics, and the development of dedicated export hubs. Strengthening supply chains and reducing input costs are also seen as critical to improving competitiveness.
The strategy further highlights the need for skill development and technology adoption, encouraging manufacturers to move up the value chain and focus on high-performance and specialized sports equipment.
With global demand for sports goods on the rise, the report positions India to tap into emerging opportunities, create jobs, and boost export revenues through a coordinated policy push.
