India’s pharmaceutical exports to West Asia have come under pressure amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the region, prompting industry leaders to call for the creation of a dedicated “Health Security Corridor” to safeguard critical supply chains.

Exporters report delays, rising freight costs, and logistical disruptions due to heightened risks along key shipping routes. Several consignments have faced longer transit times, while insurance premiums for shipments have surged, impacting overall trade efficiency and margins.

West Asia remains a crucial market for Indian pharmaceutical products, including generic medicines, vaccines, and essential healthcare supplies. Any prolonged disruption threatens not only export volumes but also the availability of affordable medicines in the region.

Industry bodies have proposed a “Health Security Corridor” — a coordinated framework involving secure shipping lanes, priority customs clearance, and government-backed logistics support — to ensure uninterrupted movement of critical medical supplies during times of crisis.

Experts say such a corridor could function through collaboration between governments, shipping lines, and international agencies, similar to mechanisms used for food and energy security. It would help de-risk supply chains and maintain continuity in essential healthcare deliveries.

While companies are exploring alternative routes and inventory strategies to mitigate risks, stakeholders stress that a policy-driven solution is essential to ensure resilience, particularly as geopolitical uncertainties continue to weigh on global trade flows.
