India has launched a new Port Efficiency Index along with a series of digital maritime reforms aimed at improving trade facilitation, enhancing operational performance, and strengthening the competitiveness of the country’s port sector. The initiatives form part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize maritime infrastructure and streamline logistics processes across the supply chain.

The Port Efficiency Index is designed to measure and benchmark the performance of ports on key operational parameters, including cargo handling efficiency, vessel turnaround time, berth productivity, and service quality. By creating a standardized assessment framework, the government aims to encourage greater transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement across major and non-major ports.

Alongside the index, authorities have introduced digital maritime reforms focused on simplifying documentation, reducing processing times, and improving coordination among shipping lines, port operators, customs authorities, and other stakeholders. The measures are expected to promote paperless transactions, enhance data sharing, and improve the overall ease of doing business in the maritime sector.

The reforms are expected to support India’s growing trade volumes by reducing logistics bottlenecks and improving cargo movement efficiency. Faster port operations and greater digital integration can help lower transaction costs for exporters and importers while strengthening the reliability of supply chains.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiatives, noting that performance-based benchmarking and digitalization are critical for aligning Indian ports with global best practices. Improved efficiency is expected to enhance the attractiveness of Indian ports for international shipping lines and support the country’s ambitions to become a major maritime and logistics hub.

The latest measures complement ongoing investments in port modernization, multimodal connectivity, and logistics infrastructure under national development programs. As trade volumes continue to expand, the Port Efficiency Index and digital maritime reforms are expected to play an important role in driving productivity, improving service standards, and supporting long-term growth in India’s maritime economy.
