The Port of Mombasa recorded a throughput of 2.1 million TEUs in 2025, marking a strong performance for East Africa’s largest and busiest seaport. The milestone reflects steady growth in regional trade, increased transit cargo volumes, and continued investments in port infrastructure and operational efficiency.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) said the growth was supported by higher containerised imports and exports serving Kenya and key hinterland markets, including Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Improved road and rail connectivity, particularly the standard gauge railway (SGR), has helped speed up cargo evacuation from the port and reduce dwell times.

The port has also benefited from ongoing terminal modernisation, enhanced berth productivity, and digitalisation initiatives aimed at streamlining vessel and cargo handling processes. Officials noted that the performance in 2025 reinforces Mombasa’s role as a critical maritime gateway for East and Central Africa.

Looking ahead, KPA said further capacity expansion and efficiency measures are planned to support rising trade volumes and maintain the port’s competitiveness as regional demand for containerised cargo continues to grow.
