The Kerala Department of Ports is looking into the possibility of starting cargo ship services from Kollam Port to Lakshadweep and Maldives. Given the short distance between the southern part of Lakshadweep and the Kollam coast, officials are also considering offering cruise ship services. Apart from this, facilities for sea tourism will also be developed.

To discuss these opportunities, a meeting with entrepreneurs and port officials is scheduled for Wednesday at the Neendakara Maritime Institute. This meeting aims to introduce potential business prospects and gather input from stakeholders.

Kollam is notable for being the deepest non-major port under the Maritime Board, with a depth of seven metres. The port features a 101-metre-long passenger berth and a 187-metre-long cargo berth. It also has facilities for a container yard and a godown facility capable of handling 35 to 40 tonnes of cargo with crane arrangement as well. Once an immigration check post is established, passenger and cruise ships will have an easier time arriving and departing from Kollam. The potential for importing cashews is also being considered as part of the cargo services.

The port has received an extension for its International Ship Security System Certificate, with its annual inspection and is valid for five years. This certificate is reviewed and updated every year by the Mercantile Marine Department.

In the coming days, the Minister for Ports will inaugurate newly constructed facilities, including an Administrative Office, a Parcel and Shipping Office, and an Assistant Executive Office, along with the Mechanical Engineering Department Office. Plans are also underway
to extend the wharfs and deepen the harbour to accommodate larger vessels.

The meeting on Wednesday will aim to address any concerns entrepreneurs may have while highlighting the available opportunities.

Entrepreneurs are also encouraged to meet with port officials, including the Regional Port Officer, during regular working days from 3 pm to 4 pm for further clarification and communication.
