The exports of readymade garments from India, has reached the pre-pandemic level of exports at Rs 16,191 crore in FY23, slightly more than the exports worth Rs 16,138 crore in FY19. On the other hand, cotton textile exports declined to Rs 11,085 crore in FY23 from Rs 12,405 in FY19, Minister of Textile Piyush Goyal told the Parliament on Wednesday.

Goyal, while replying to a question in the Parliament, also gave a break up of all kinds of textile exports over the past 5 years. According to the data, the exports of man-made textile in FY23 also stood at nearly the same level of exports in the pre-pandemic era. The export of man-made textile in FY23 stood at Rs 5,412 crore, that was nearly the same value of exports of Rs 5,551 crore in FY19.

“During 2021-22 there was a surge due to pent-up demand and the country’s export registered a remarkable growth of 41 per cent year-on-year in textile products as compared to 2020-21. During 2022-23, the international demand normalised, and the prices of cotton were hovering above the normal prices which resulted in a slight correction in the country’s exports,” the minister said.

Stating the export statistics of FY24, Goyal added that the exports of textiles and apparel (including handicrafts), had shown a declining trend during April to July 2023 as compared to April to July 2022, primarily on account of impact of Geopolitical situation on global demand. “However, there is improvement from August, 2023 onwards.

Month wise increase in textile and apparel exports (including handicrafts) in August, September and October of 2023 with respect to the same period of last year is 6 per cent, 3 per cent and 13 per cent respectively,” Goyal indeed further.

The same shows that the exports of wool and woolen textile has been highest in the last 3 years. The exports of wool and woollen textiles have risen from Rs 181 crore in FY20 to Rs 205 crore in FY23. But the exports of carpets from India have declined to the lowest levels in the last 5 years. The exports of carpets dwindled from Rs 1,790 crore in FY22 to Rs 1,366 crore in FY23, in the pre-pandemic years, the exports of carpets from India has been
    hovering around Rs 1,450 crores.

Goyal also talked about the government schemes that were rolled out with an intent to boost textile exports from India. “The Government is implementing various schemes on pan-India basis including the State of Maharashtra to support the textile sector such as Production Linked Incentive(PLI) scheme for textiles, Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA), Silk Samagra, National Handloom Development Programme, National Handicrafts Development Programme, Integrated Wool Development Programme (IWDP), National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), Scheme for Integrated Textile Park(SITP),” he added further.
