Container volumes across Saudi Arabia’s major ports registered a 2% year-on-year increase in January, reflecting steady trade activity and improving supply chain flows at the start of the year.

According to data released by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), total container throughput saw moderate growth driven by gains in transshipment traffic and resilient import demand. Export volumes also remained stable despite ongoing global trade uncertainties.

Key gateways including Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdulaziz Port and King Abdullah Port contributed significantly to the overall performance, supported by enhanced operational efficiency and expanded service networks.

Mawani attributed the growth to continued investments in port infrastructure, digitalisation initiatives and improved logistics integration under the Kingdom’s broader transport and logistics strategy aligned with Saudi Vision 2030.

The authority has been focusing on strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as a regional logistics hub by attracting new shipping lines, expanding terminal capacity and promoting public-private partnerships. Recent upgrades in automation and smart port systems have also helped reduce vessel turnaround times and improve cargo handling productivity.

Industry analysts expect container volumes to remain stable in the coming months, supported by diversified trade flows and government-backed logistics reforms, although external demand conditions and freight rate movements will continue to influence growth trends.
