The Port of Yokohama is moving forward with plans to introduce a dedicated chassis depot aimed at improving trailer handling and traffic flow at its container terminals. The new facility is part of broader efforts to streamline cargo transport and reduce congestion in and around the port’s logistics infrastructure.

Under the initiative, the on-chassis depot will serve as a temporary storage location for chassis that are carrying containers. This will help even out the number of incoming trailers by encouraging truck operators to use off-peak booking slots, reducing bottlenecks during busy times and cutting down waiting times at terminal gates.

The project was announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Kanto Regional Development Bureau during a meeting focused on modernising container transport. The depot will be integrated with CONPAS, a port information system that tracks container movements and manages bookings to optimise operations.

Long waits for trucks at container terminals have been a persistent issue at Yokohama Port, prompting authorities to adopt this combined chasis depot and digital booking solution to promote a more balanced flow of trailers throughout the day.

Shippers, hauliers and logistics partners are expected to benefit from smoother terminal access and improved turnaround times once the system is fully operational.
