Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived in India on Tuesday for a three-day official visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as green energy, shipping, civil aviation, and space. This marks Wong’s first visit to India as Singapore’s Prime Minister.

Announcing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said PM Wong is visiting at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is accompanied by senior Singaporean ministers including Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance Jeffrey Siow, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade Gan Siow Huang, along with other senior officials.

During his visit, PM Wong will hold bilateral talks with PM Modi on Thursday, where both leaders are expected to sign key agreements aimed at strengthening economic engagement and strategic cooperation. The Singaporean Prime Minister will also meet President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and other members of the Indian Cabinet. Additionally, he is scheduled to visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

“Singapore is an important partner for India, including in our ‘Act East’ Policy,” the MEA said, recalling that during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

    Economic and Strategic Collaboration

Sources close to the development said that the visit will focus on expanding two-way economic engagement and future-oriented sectors such as sustainability, advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, skills development, connectivity, and space. The two leaders are also expected to virtually inaugurate a container terminal in Maharashtra, a project in which Singapore has invested over USD 1 billion (approximately Rs 8,800 crore).

The countries are exploring collaborative projects including exporting solar energy from India to Singapore via an underwater cable, and the export of green ammonia and green hydrogen, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable development.

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations. The MEA emphasized that the visit will provide an opportunity to “review our robust and multi-faceted cooperation and to set the path for future collaboration,” while also addressing regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Singapore has historically been a top foreign investor in India, accounting for around 24% of India’s FDI equity inflows since 2000. The current visit is expected to further reinforce India’s strategic and economic partnership with Singapore, particularly in emerging and high-potential sectors.
