SITA is expanding the role of its India operations in developing and delivering airport technology solutions across the Asia-Pacific region, as demand grows for automated, biometric and digital passenger-processing systems.

The company has been working with Indian airports on large-scale digitalisation projects, including its partnership with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) under the DigiYatra programme. SITA is deploying biometric and contactless passenger-processing technologies across Indian airports, including Smart Path, passenger-flow management systems and Face Pods.

SITA’s India operations are also supporting the company’s broader “Make in India” strategy. The company has said it is increasing its India-based support and capabilities while working with the Indian government and aviation stakeholders to advance airport digitalisation.

The technology portfolio includes biometric passenger processing, self-service check-in and bag drop, automated boarding, baggage tracking and airport operational management systems. Such technologies are becoming increasingly important as airports across Asia-Pacific prepare for sustained passenger growth and seek to improve efficiency without relying solely on additional physical infrastructure.

SITA’s regional expansion is already visible in major airport projects. In Vietnam, for example, SITA is providing an end-to-end technology package for the new Terminal 2 at Phu Quoc International Airport, including 150 Smart Path kiosks, 100 automated bag-drop units and 38 dual-lane biometric boarding gates. The terminal is designed to handle 24 million passengers annually, with capacity eventually scalable to 50 million.

The company’s technology is also being deployed widely across Asia. SITA reported more than 3,000 Smart Path biometric touchpoints across Asia, covering airports in countries including India, Thailand and China.

India is therefore becoming an important base for SITA as the aviation technology market expands across the region. The country’s rapidly growing passenger volumes, expanding airport infrastructure and government-backed digital initiatives provide a significant domestic market while creating opportunities to develop expertise and solutions that can be deployed internationally.

SITA’s broader regional strategy is focused on making airport journeys faster and more seamless through biometrics, artificial intelligence, automation, real-time data and connected airport systems. The company is scheduled to showcase its latest airport technologies at PTE Asia 2026 in Singapore in September.

With Asia-Pacific expected to remain one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, the expansion of India-developed and India-supported airport technology could strengthen the country’s position in the global aviation technology supply chain while helping airports across the region modernise passenger and operational processes.
