Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) terminals have recorded their highest-ever throughput of 2.41 million TEUs in 2024.

The Port of Colombo, together with other terminals, achieved a historic milestone with a total throughput of 7.78 million TEUs.

South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) handled 2.01 million TEUs, while Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) led with 3.35 million TEUs, cementing its position as the leading terminal with complete deep-water facilities at the Port of Colombo.

This record throughput corresponds to ongoing infrastructural works aimed at increasing the port’s capacity.

The Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT), which is already operational on a limited basis, has already increased the port’s handling capacity. The terminal is planned to be fully operational later this year, providing a significant gain in efficiency.

Furthermore, the newly completed Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) is scheduled to begin operations within the same time frame, adding capacity to meet rising demand.

According to SLPA, figures from 2024 show a significant year-on-year (YoY) improvement over 2023, with all main terminals, including SLPA, SAGT, and CICT, contributing to the port’s outstanding performance.

In October 2024, SeaLead Shipping and SLPA formally launched their new direct liner service at the Port of Colombo.
