Tamil Nadu has emerged as a key driver of India’s textile export sector, recording a 29% growth over the past four years and reinforcing its position as one of the country’s leading manufacturing hubs.
The state’s strong performance is attributed to its well-established textile ecosystem, which includes spinning, weaving, processing, and garment manufacturing clusters. Industrial centres such as Tiruppur, Coimbatore, and Erode continue to play a pivotal role in boosting export output, particularly in knitwear, home textiles, and apparel segments.
Industry stakeholders point to improved infrastructure, availability of skilled labour, and integration of supply chains as major factors supporting growth. The presence of a large number of export-oriented units has enabled Tamil Nadu to respond effectively to global demand trends, even amid fluctuating international market conditions.
Exporters note that demand from key markets in Europe and North America has contributed to sustained shipments, while diversification into new markets has further strengthened export volumes. Investments in modern machinery, quality compliance, and sustainability practices have also enhanced the competitiveness of Tamil Nadu’s textile products.
However, the sector continues to face challenges such as volatility in raw material prices, logistics constraints, and global demand uncertainty. Industry representatives have called for continued policy support, including incentives for exports, smoother logistics, and measures to reduce input costs.
With its consistent growth trajectory, Tamil Nadu is expected to maintain its leadership in India’s textile exports, contributing significantly to employment generation and foreign exchange earnings while strengthening the country’s position in the global textile market.
