The V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has recorded a notable rise in cargo movement, with rock phosphate traffic increasing by 15.18% during FY 2025–26 (April–February) compared to the same period in FY 2024–25. The growth highlights the port’s strengthening position as a major hub for bulk cargo handling and its critical role in supporting India’s industrial supply chains.

According to port officials, the surge in rock phosphate imports reflects increasing demand from fertilizer manufacturers and the agricultural sector. Rock phosphate is a key raw material used in the production of phosphate-based fertilizers, which are essential for improving soil fertility and boosting crop yields.

Officials from the port authority attributed the positive trend to a combination of improved operational efficiency, enhanced cargo-handling infrastructure, and streamlined logistics processes. Over the past few years, the port has implemented several modernization initiatives, including the expansion of mechanized handling systems, better berth utilization, and digital tracking systems that have significantly reduced vessel turnaround time.

Located in Thoothukudi, the port serves as one of India’s key maritime gateways for bulk commodities. Its strategic position along major international shipping routes enables efficient connectivity with markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other global trade hubs.

Industry experts note that the steady growth in cargo volumes also reflects the port’s growing importance in supporting fertilizer supply chains across southern India. Efficient handling of raw materials such as rock phosphate ensures a stable supply to fertilizer plants, ultimately benefiting the agricultural sector.

The port authority has been actively working on capacity enhancement and infrastructure development projects to accommodate rising cargo volumes. These include improvements in storage facilities, better road and rail connectivity to the hinterland, and investments in modern cargo-handling equipment.

With the continued rise in bulk cargo traffic and increasing industrial demand, the V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority is expected to further strengthen its role as a critical logistics hub in the region, supporting both domestic industry and international trade.

Port officials expressed confidence that the sustained improvements in efficiency and infrastructure will help maintain strong cargo growth in the coming years while reinforcing the port’s contribution to India’s maritime and economic development.
