V.O. Chidambaranar Port, one of India’s leading gateways for bulk and break-bulk cargo, has recorded remarkable growth in handling construction materials during the current financial year 2025-26.

Up to August 2025, the Port handled 5,48,994 tonnes of construction materials, registering an impressive 212.87% increase compared to 1,75,468 tonnes handled during the corresponding period of the previous financial year 2024-25.

This surge reflects the Port’s continuous efforts to enhance its capabilities and infrastructure for bulk cargo handling. Over the past years, construction material throughput at VOC Port has witnessed a consistent upward trajectory — rising from 9,39,113 tonnes in 2023-24 to 11,01,041 tonnes in 2024-25.

The key commodities handled include stone rough, stone aggregate, stone dust, and paver blocks, which are essential for infrastructure development projects. These materials are primarily sourced from the Port’s hinterland and exported to the Maldives, contributing significantly to the island nation’s ongoing infrastructure initiatives.

This achievement underscores VOC Port’s strategic role in promoting regional connectivity and trade cooperation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Neighbourhood First Policy, which emphasizes strengthening economic and infrastructural ties with India’s immediate neighbours.

Speaking on the milestone, Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, stated:

“The significant growth in construction material handling underscores VOC Port’s growing importance as a trusted gateway for bulk cargo trade. With the ongoing infrastructure enhancements, the Port is well-positioned to further support regional and international infrastructure development.”

With continuous modernization, capacity expansion, and seamless logistics connectivity, VOC Port remains committed to driving India’s maritime growth and supporting regional development.
