India’s agricultural export sector has marked several unprecedented achievements, with multiple products reaching international markets for the first time, signaling a significant expansion in the country’s agricultural trade capabilities.
The developments reflect a strategic focus on leveraging technology and promoting organic farming practices to enhance product quality for global markets.
Recent export achievements include the inaugural shipment of premium Sangola and Bhagwa pomegranates to Australia via sea route, establishing a new market access pathway for Indian fresh produce.
The country also successfully exported its GI-tagged Purandar figs to European markets, with Poland receiving India’s first ready-to-drink fig juice in 2024, following earlier exports to Germany in 2022.
The diversification of India’s agricultural exports has extended to specialty produce from various regions.
Notable accomplishments include the export of dragon fruit, locally known as ‘Kamalam’, to London and Bahrain in 2021, sourced from farmers in Gujarat’s Kutch region and West Bengal’s West Midnapore district.
Additionally, Maharashtra’s Bhagwa pomegranates made their debut in the United States market through a trial air shipment in 2023, with Solapur district accounting for approximately 50 percent of the country’s pomegranate exports.
India’s northeastern states have emerged as significant contributors to this export expansion. Assam’s Burmese grapes, known locally as ‘leteku’, were exported to Dubai via Delhi in 2021.
Tripura achieved its first jackfruit export to Germany, while Nagaland’s ‘Raja Mircha’ (king chilli) reached London markets.
The region also saw success with the export of ‘red rice’ (Bao-dhaan) from the Brahmaputra valley to the United States, notable for its chemical-free cultivation methods.
The agricultural export initiatives have also benefited southern regions, as exemplified by the first shipment of GI-tagged Vazhakulam Pineapple from Kerala to Dubai and Sharjah in 2022.
These developments are part of a broader strategy to enhance rural incomes and establish India’s agricultural products in international markets, while simultaneously promoting sustainable farming practices and geographical indicators.
