Ocean Network Express (ONE) has more than doubled its market share on intra-European trades over the past 12 months, becoming a top-10 carrier for the segment.
According to Alphaliner, ONE now holds a 2.6% share of the intra-European market, equating to more than 30,000 teu, up from 11,500 teu, or 1%, this time last year, taking it to ninth spot in the ranks of service providers from 19th in February 2024.
The carrier group also more than doubled its fleet size, with 17 containerships now deployed, and can boast the highest capacity growth on the intra-Europe trade.
ONE also increased its average vessel size by more than 350 teu, from 1,450 teu to 1,809 teu, noted Alphaliner, which added: “The Singapore-headquartered carrier today operates nine intra-European services, compared with just three loops a year ago.”
The gains come on the back of a slew of new services in the segment, eight of them accounting for 29,600 teu of ONE’s deployed capacity, said Alphaliner, highlighting the two new North Europe-East Mediterranean loops,
Launched in cooperation with Evergreen and Yang Ming in the latter stages of 2024, ONE operates five vessels, offering a combined 16,000 teu.
Alongside ONE, the mainline operators continue to dominate the intra-Europe feeder segment with a combined 70.4% market share, leaving the regional carriers and common feeder operators scrabbling for the rest – although in the past two years, the liners’ share has dropped 3.3%.
Pointing out that MSC was “still in pole position by deployed capacity”, Alphaliner said: “With a market share of 28.8% (29.7% a year ago), the Geneva-based carrier has only gained 0.5% in capacity compared with a year ago, but still has by far the largest market share of all carriers in the intra-European service segment.”
More notable, however, has been the downsizing by Maersk, which pulled more than 30,000 teu of capacity from the segment, prompting a 3.2% downturn in its market share.
Accounting for some 20,000 teu of that reduced capacity was the Danish carrier cut to the North-west Continental-Baltic loop, from four to two vessels, and shuttering three intra-North Europe and intra-Mediterranean loops.
But where Maersk dwindled, CMA CGM pushed ahead, increasing its capacity on the trade by more than 13%, to attain 17.3% market share, with 106 vessels now servicing intra-European trades.
Some 13,000 teu of the additional capacity comes with its new Bora Med Service, covering Turkey, the Adriatic, and the East Mediterranean – just one of five new loops added this year.
And of the independents, Unifeeder has overtaken Turkish competition Arkas Line to become the largest independent feeder operator in Europe.
Alphaliner said: “With a market share of 5%, the Aarhus-based carrier now takes fifth spot in the league of largest intra-Europe operators by deployed capacity, with Arkasone spot behind.”
