Peru has completed Stage 3A of the North Terminal modernisation at the Port of Callao, a $95 million upgrade led by APM Terminals (APMT) in collaboration with the Peruvian government.

The project includes 12 vertical silos, increasing grain storage capacity from 25000 to  85,000 tonnes, and the installation of two high-capacity continuous ship unloaders (CSUs), raising unloading speeds from 900 to 1,300 tonnes per hour.

Carlos Arias, CEO of APM Terminals Callao, said: “The vertical design and free-fall system of the new silos allow us to serve more vessels, more safely, and with greater energy efficiency.”

Stage 3A also includes 2.13 hectares of newly paved cargo handling area, a new access gate for rolling and oversized cargo, and eight additional weighbridges — doubling the terminal’s goods intake capacity.

The modernisation is part of a six-phase public-private concession with a total planned investment of $1.2 billion.

Stage 3B will follow, involving dock reconstruction, new cranes, and a further $328 million  in infrastructure improvements.

Arias added: “These developments are not just technical upgrades — they are strategic enablers of Peru’s integration into global trade networks. By investing in infrastructure, technology, and people, we are building a resilient, future-ready port system that supports national development and regional competitiveness.”

Recently, DP World‘s terminal at the Port of Callao reported record volumes, including a 19 per cent increase in container throughput and a sharp rise in agricultural exports.
