The Port of Valencia has received two Liebherr ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes, which were assembled off-quay to ensure ongoing terminal operations were not disrupted.

The cranes were shipped from the Port of Fenit, Ireland, and arrived in preassembled components, including a 76.3-metre derrick boom and a 69.6-metre main beam.

Mammoet used nearly 90 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) to move the components across the site.

Assembly involved crawler cranes with lifting capacities of 600 tonnes, alongside telescopic cranes rated between 80 and 250 tonnes.

The cranes’ main frames were manoeuvred into position using tandem lifts, while engineers from Mammoet and Liebherr coordinated mechanical and electrical integration, supported by subcontractors.

Once complete, each assembled crane was moved 600 metres to the quayside using SPMTs fitted with interfacing transport beams to stabilise the load. The cranes were then lowered into their final position on longitudinal rails.

Javier de Pablo Arenzana, Sales Manager at Mammoet, said: “As soon as the components were delivered, they were immediately taken away from the quayside to allow operations to continue. The installation process was equally as quick, minimising disruption.

“We have worked with Liebherr for many years and across a number of different projects. Liebherr value our expertise and experience and are proud to be one of Liebherr’s key partners for this kind of work.”

Recently, dship Carriers ordered eight Liebherr LS 250 heavy-lift cranes for its latest D 500-class vessels. Each crane offers a lifting capacity of up to 250 tonnes and a 36-metre outreach, with a low deadweight of 150 tonnes, enhancing vessel stability and cargo handling.
