In a strong show of solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, over 2,000 businessmen from diverse sectors across Gujarat gathered in Surat under the banner of the Progressive Alliance. The meeting aimed to chart strategies to make India the world’s third-largest economy, while also tackling the challenges posed by impending US tariff threats.
The event served as a platform for entrepreneurs from Surat and other cities in Gujarat to brainstorm on ways to boost MSMEs and export-oriented industries in the face of potential trade disruptions. Discussions revolved around how prioritising Indian-made goods could strengthen the domestic economy, promote self-reliance, and fortify the country against global market volatility.
Prime Minister Modi, in his recent address, had emphasised that Swadeshi is “anything made with the sweat and effort of an Indian” and urged the nation to adopt the mantra of Vocal for Local. He called on citizens to take a pledge to support homegrown products, not just as consumers, but as active contributors to India’s economic growth.
Kamal Diora, who conducted the Surat gathering, said, “PM Modi’s Swadeshi resolution will give us new strength amidst the US tariffs. We are committed to supporting ‘Vocal for Local’ and working towards making India the third-largest economy in the world.”
Business leaders present expressed confidence in the initiative’s potential to galvanise domestic industry.
Ashish Sukhadia, a prominent diamond businessman from Surat, remarked, “As Indians, we fully support ‘Vocal for Local’. India already ranks among the top four economies in GDP terms, and if we unite behind this initiative, we can overcome any challenge. We are also exploring ways to strengthen business-to-business support.”
Textile businessman Amit Koladiya highlighted the scope for innovation, stating, “Under ‘Vocal for Local’, we are brainstorming on new product lines and enhancing the competitiveness of the goods we deal in. This is not just about survival—it’s about growth.”
The Progressive Alliance concluded with a pledge from participants to actively promote Indian products, expand collaborative networks, and innovate for global competitiveness, turning the Vocal for Local vision into a business reality.
