Barely a month since becoming operational, the new Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT) at Ahmedabad airport has emerged as the city’s primary freight hub, already handling nearly 70% of international cargo traffic. According to industry sources, the facility has processed about 5,000 metric tonnes of international freight, along with a similar volume of domestic cargo.

Spread over 21,000 sq m, with scope for expansion up to 33,000 sq m, the ICT is witnessing a major shift from airlines. Air India, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines have already moved their cargo operations to the new hub, while Blue Dart and SpiceJet are expected to commence services next week.

In FY25, Ahmedabad airport handled around 60,000 MT of cargo (domestic and international). Between April and July this fiscal, volumes stood at 20,000 MT. The ICT is expected to significantly boost throughput, with future capacity projections reaching 200,000 MT of cargo every month.

“The response from cargo carriers has been phenomenal. We’re witnessing a significant upgrade in how freight moves through Ahmedabad,” said a source tracking the development.

While freight forwarders noted minor teething issues in the initial weeks, operator Adani Airports assured that systems and staffing have been streamlined.

“In addition to the existing workforce, we are working closely with stakeholders to ensure scalable staffing during peak hours,” an Adani Airports spokesperson said.

Unlike older facilities constrained by space and slower processes, the ICT offers seamless connectivity, faster turnaround times, and improved compliance with global safety standards. It currently handles a wide range of consignments including perishables, pharmaceuticals, courier shipments, and engineering exports.

The timing is critical for Gujarat’s export-driven economy, where pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, and engineering goods continue to drive rising freight volumes. Industry experts believe the ICT will provide a vital boost to trade facilitation, strengthening Ahmedabad’s position as a key logistics hub in western India.
