Hambantota International Port (HIP) recorded a remarkable 175 per cent year-on-year growth in total cargo volumes in 2025, underscoring its rapid emergence as a key maritime and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean region.

The port handled 8.24 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2025, a significant increase from 3.0 million metric tonnes in 2024, achieving this milestone despite a challenging global environment for the port and shipping industry marked by market volatility and geopolitical uncertainties.

The strong performance reflects the success of Hambantota Port’s diversified cargo strategy, operational efficiency, and growing confidence among global shipping lines and logistics operators. Increased volumes across bulk, breakbulk, and vehicle transhipment cargo contributed to the robust growth during the year.

Port officials noted that sustained infrastructure investments, improved connectivity, and customer-focused services played a critical role in attracting new business and expanding existing trade flows. The growth also reinforces Hambantota International Port’s strategic position along major East–West shipping routes.

With continued focus on capacity expansion and value-added logistics services, Hambantota International Port is well positioned to maintain its growth momentum and strengthen its role as a regional maritime gateway in the years ahead.
